AVKC Member Trains & Certifies Service Dog

Argos will be 4 years old in August 2019, but today he passed the exam/evaluation by the BC Guide & Service Dog Division of the Justice Institute to become a Service Dog for Tasha Lee.

Tasha got Argos as a puppy and started with Basic Obedience Training.  Argos showed potential to become a Service Dog and Tasha researched the requirements of taking on such a task.

It is not just teaching your dog to sit, down, stay, come, etc.  There are over 40 skills they must master to become a service dog.  It takes a lot of time and patience.  Tasha persevered through the training despite struggling with her health issues.

Argos now “officially” works for Tasha to aid her in her day-to-day tasks.

When you see them in the community, please keep your distance.  As much as everyone loves to acknowledge and pet a well behaved dog, Argos has a job to do and he can not do his job if he is distracted.  (Tasha will thank you for your understanding.)

Congratulations on this milestone event!

Basic Obedience Training

We are very proud to offer our2015BOCNOV-350 Basic Obedience Training over the past 3+ years.  Just in 2018 we trained 106 dogs which is 26% more dogs than previous year.

Primarily young dogs, but we have had many older dogs take the class with success.

Our instructor, Synneva Stubbs has lots of experience with all sorts of dogs.  As a Certified Canine Behaviour Specialist, Synneva has the patience and knowledge to help you with any struggles you may have with training your dog.

We have added training for advanced obedience skills.  We can now prepare you for taking your dog to Novice Obedience &/or Novice Rally trials.  We 18-4 Class July 2018-350x553can also prepare you for the Canine Good Neighbour test which comprises of 12 obedience exercises to demonstrate good canine manners.

Every dog has their own successes.  We have had several dogs go on to earn their Canine Good Neighbour Certificate as well as titles in Novice Rally.

We are proud to support service dogs and their acceptance in the community.  We assist a couple handlers that have “Service dogs in Training” with their on going training needs.  Shout out to Argos & Ladybug!

If you have a dog and looking for some training that is fun for you and your dog, please contact us.

2018 Premium List

Our Premium List of Events  includes:

This event is open to the general public at no cost.

Highlights for Spectators:

Friday Oct. 19th is a School Pro Day.  We recommend that the best time to bring children to the dog show would be from 10:00 am to noon.  For a Group tour, check in at the Show Secretary desk upon arrival.

Also on Friday Oct. 19th we have “Come Meet the Breeds” starting at 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm.  This where our dog exhibitors and AV Kennel Club members showcase their dogs.  Whether you want to get a closer look at any particular breed or just a dog lover at heart, we hope to have a good variety of dogs for you to see.

2018 Simple Judging Schedule (for general public) 1 pg.  Shows the 7 Breed Groups (Sporting, Hounds, Terriers, Working, Herding, Non-Sporting and Toys) being judged and the number of dogs in the group.  The best of each breed, moves on to be judged for best in Group.  The best in each of the 7 breed groups are then judged for “Best in Show”.

Sat. October 20th we have the Vancouver Island Toy Dog Club hosting a Specialty Dog Show for dogs in the Toy Breed Group.  This starts at 1:00 pm.

If you are wanting to watch a particular breed/group or just  Best in Show, come early in case judging wraps up earlier than expected.  This is especially important on Sunday as there are fewer breaks in judging.

We have a Halloween Dog Photo Contest that is open to the public.  Bring a photo of your dog in a costume by noon on Saturday to the Show Secretary desk and the judging will be done after Best in Show.

Our Halloween Dog Costume Contest/Parade is open only to dogs and their handlers/owners who are registered in the Dog Show.  The Parade of participants will take place after Best in Show (approx. 4:00 pm).  This event is a crowd pleaser.
